I can remember every fragment, speck and particle of that moment. How the tree scratched the side of my arm as I shifted my weight, how the sweat pooled at the center of my collar bone, how the breeze and the birds and even the drifting clouds seemed to just stop in place like God himself had reached down and frozen things for an instant. The smell of magnolia flowers drenched the space between us and in those brief, frozen seconds I knew that boy—with his fathomless blue eyes—was going to alter the course of my life somehow.
